Help! just purchased linksys wireless router need help with setup.?

i just purchased a linksys wireless router. i have comcast internet on my desktop but would like internet on my laptop. did i purchase the right product? does the router go on the desktop or laptop?

i'm not computer literate, sorry if it's a stupid question.|||You used to have the cable modem connected directly to the LAN port of the computer.

Now you need to run the wire from the cable modem to the WAN port of the Router. Then run a second wire from one of the four LAN ports on the router to the computer. Follow the setup guide that came with the router to set up. This usually involves running a CD. If you are not experienced with this I really recommend that you do that. But here is an outline

1. Go to http://192.168.x.y. This can be different for each router and you didn't tell us the model number. Check your user guide.

2. The default sign on is different for each model too. Some the user is admin but the password is blank, some the user is blank but the password is admin. etc.

3. You should give the router a name and you should set a security password that the CD will help you set up. However, you can for the time being just use the default name. There are a lot of routers out there with the name 'linksys' and no security.|||I'm assuming that you were getting your internet directly from the cable modem before. You'll need to unplug the ethernet cable from your desktop computer and plug it into the proper port on the router. Then you'll need to run a new ethernet cable from Port 1 on the router to your desktop computer.

To get wireless internet on your laptop, your wireless network may need to be configured.

Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.1.1/

If it prompts you for a username and password, type "admin" in each field. Your router should have come with basic instructions on what to do from there.
