What is the linksys setup page ip address?

I need to reset my wireless linksys router's security b/c I think I messed it up. For some reason my wireless connection works all the time but when I use the hardwired computer connected to the router it resets the connectino periodically. I want to reset my router security.. This is my only guess as to what I should do. Any suggestions? What is that IP again? thanks.|||192.168.1.1

How do you setup a wep key for your linksys router?

The WEP key is set by logging in to your router then choosing the "Wireless" tab (2nd from the left) and then "Wireless security". The easiest way is to specify a passphrase, which will generate the WEP key(s) - you only need the first one.

These days, WPA is recommended because it provides better security. WEP is more compatible with older wireless equipment.

I have a linksys router and it was setup without a password and i dont know how to access it. what do i do?

How do I setup a username/password on my router to prevent others from using my network?

Well, title pretty much ask the question...How do I setup a username/password on my router to prevent others from using my network? I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL router. I really want to setup a network name/password so people using wireless adapters/laptops can't access my internet connection around my area. Someone help please ?|||Hi there,

Well, I would use the 'permit ONLY' option in linksys router. When in router web, click wireless tab at the top and follow by Wireless MAC Filter, check the box which state 'permit only'.

Remeber to key in your own mac address in the 'Edit mac filter list' or you yourself being shut out....

Just in case...you could get your mac address by going to cmd prompt and key in ipconfig/all and hit enter. Look for wireless physical address, key in that numbers or letters in your router setting.

By doing the above, only those mac address keyed in are able to connect to your network.

Cheers!|||To enable the wireless security settings of the router:

1) Log into your router and change the password for admin to something other than what it is now. Write it down. Label the bottom of the router with either a label maker or a piece of tape. Attach password tape to the bottom of the router Don't cover the vents with the tape or label. Change the SSID to something other than what it is now. Nothing screams leech my 'Net to a slug; like a router with an SSID of Linksys or D-Link or Netgear.

2) Go to the wireless settings tab and enable WPA or WPA2. This depends on the wireless devices you have on YOUR network. If all of your devices use WPA2, then enable WPA2 only. If you have a single device that can only use WPA then you have to use WPA on the router. Set the WPA or WPA2 password then write that on another label or tape and attach to bottom of your router. If someone steals your router it won't matter if they have the password or not because they could manually reset the router.

3) Set the same WPA or WPA2 passphrase you used in step 2, to each wireless device on your network.

Don't bother using WEP. It can be cracked in 5 minutes or less. If you have a wireless device that cannot use WPA or WPA2 replace it ASAP with a device that is WPA2 capable.

How do I setup a home network using xp pro and a linksys router?

I have 4 computers, 3 using XP Pro, 1 using Vista. I have cable internet, which is connected directly to my Linksys router model # BEFW11S4. Internet works great on all of the computers. 2 of the computers have a wireless connection to the router (1 of the XPs and the VISTA), and the other 2 are connected via Ethernet cords. I just want to be able to share a printer (if fairly easy to setup), and files between all the computers. I tried running the network wizard, made a network setup file, put it in the wireless XP computer and it told me the computer already belongs to a domain?? Please help.|||In order for you to share them all, you have to make them all part of a "workgroup" you are not in a "domain" that is if you had a server running windows server software. On the XP: Right click on my computer click on the computer name tab, click on where it says "To rename the computer or join a domain click Change" You can name your computer whatever you want, maybe leave the name like it is already, since you know what each one does or belongs to, but go to where it says member of: click on workgroup, and make up a group name it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it is short an simple, something that identifies your home network. then restart the PC. do this for all the PC's.

In the Vista computer, is about the same, except after you click on properties in the computer, click on the left where it says: Advanced system settings, then click on the computer name tab and click on "to rename this computer click change".

You might have to turn off firewalls, because the Vista has a security issue trusting other computers. Good luck.

How to connect a linksys wireless router to my adsl modem?

I have both the linksys router and DSL modem ON

I am able to connect to the internet but the setup wizard failed saying error in router connection

By the way my brother has a pentium 4 assembled PC

How do I establish a wireless connection with it|||have you got the DSL modem connected to the internet port of the linksys router ?

Also how does the DSL modem connect to your PC if you connected it directly with regards to ip addressing , does it use DHCP ie it assigns an ip address automatically or do you have to assign your computer a static ip address along with subnet mask, default gateway and DNS ?

The above will determine how you configure your linksys router and instead of using the cd to configure your linksys router use the ip address of the router via a web browser to access the config page of the linksys router and configure it through the web browser with regards to wireless, wireless security and the routers setup config.

drop me a message if you need more help or give linksys a call.|||forget the installer program. Use the web based interface described in the manual. uninstall all the router software. You would be better off using a dsl router, this would replace the existing modem and remove many of the problems.

How do you setup a used router with a new security password?

I have a used linksys wireless router that works but comes up as unsecured network. How do I setup if as it was brand new so that it will have a password that I have created? Step by Step instruction is what this guy will need. Thanks..|||Go to your router mfgr's website %26amp; get the user manual for the unit.

You'll need to use this for navigating around the 'Administrative interface".

Wireless Router settings:

With a CAT5 cable, tether the router to computer; open a browser; in the address bar type 192.168.X.X (see user manual for exact address for administration interface address) %26amp; find the Settings for Security (or similar):

Default entrance info page: http://www.routerpasswords.com/

Set for WPA (or WPA2 if your computers support this level) %26amp; AES.

(Use WEP only as a last resort: it's apprentice work to crack).

Also;

Turn off 'SSID' broadcast (be sure to give your network a new name (nothing obvious!) %26amp; write it down; it will be needed to 'Add' your wifi network later in your computer settings;

(Or have a little more security by naming it "[your County's] Sheriff's Department Intercept")

Disable: UPnP; QoS (unless using VoIP or gaming); and WAN access to Administrative interface.

Enable: Router management username %26amp; bulletproof passphrase (not the same as Internet access password, which would be the PSK (pre-shared key)).

PSK's should be over 7 characters; letters %26amp; numbers (mixed), not words.

Put this # on tape %26amp; put on the top of the router for easy access.

Note: Mac address filtering will prevent casual freeloaders, but will not deter committed hackers. Mac addresses are on the front end of packets, therefore un-encrypted %26amp; easily copied and used to 'spoof' packets; enabling a 'man in the middle' attacks.

You might want to also set (in 'Connections') as 'always connected' to prevent disconnects when there is no activity to or from the Internet.

I've not seen Vista for set up. but Win7 follows %26amp; might be similar:

To access these settings go to Control Panel (All control panel items)%26gt; Network and Sharing Center%26gt; Change advanced sharing settings.

There are 2 basic modes: A) Home %26amp; Office; or B) Public. Each of which can be tailored to suite your particular situation.

For A)

You may want configurations that allow maximum interaction with minimum connection issues to other devices in your known network.

These may include "turning on" Network discovery; File %26amp; Printer sharing; Public folder sharing (read description first); File sharing (read description); Media streaming; and so on. These config's allow particular functions, so read carefully what they do, and decide if it's what you want.

For B)

When "on the road", you'll want just the opposite conditions: minimum outside access to your system resources.

Keep as much as possible blocked/turned off to prevent snooping.

Again, read what each topic does and decide if it's what you want.

How to connect a linksys wireless router to my adsl modem on an iMac?

I have both the linksys router and DSL modem ON

I am able to connect to the internet but the setup wizard failed saying error in router connection

I went to the network properties and I could not turn on the airport

The properties showed that the ethernet is configured through DHCP|||You really DON'T need the CD to configure the router. If you have an ethernet connection to the router simply address the router directly with a web browser type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your MAC. It will ask for the username and password. Linksys uses two combos for passwords, newer units use admin / admin older units dont use a username just enter admin for the password.

Once logged in, you can then setup the router directly.

PS Don't attempt to connect wireless until the router is working. USE A CABLE for the setup. Once setup you can disconnect the cable and connect wirelessly. Part of the setup is used to setup the wireless etc.

If you are connected to the internet and the router is all that is connected to the computer, you already have the router working!

The setup should be Modem----%26gt;router wan port / router lan to ----%26gt; computer

I Lost my Linksys Wireless-B BroadBand Router BEFW11S4 Version 4 setup CD?

I had to reformat my hard drive but now I can't find my linksys installation cd so I can't access the internet. I've tried the linksys web site and http://192.168.1.1 but neither of them have worked. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help, thank you.|||You never need those installation cds that come with routers. The default Linksys setup page is 192.168.1.1. There's no real reason for you to configure or reconfigure anything though. If it was working before you formatted, then its settings haven't changed, and it should still be in the same working state. Since you cant get online, or even get to the 192.168.1.1 page, it sounds like you didn't reinstall your network card drivers. You need to reinstall those, and any other drivers that your computer needs to operate correctly after a format.|||The BEFW11S4 Version 4 may be old, but not pathetic.

It supports WPA, so is as secure as most routers.

It cannot be cracked in 8 seconds, and of course it is not a modem :)

|||Well, you can try Linksys site. Why not just update to something more modern? I could crack your modem in 8 seconds and shut you down with no remorse. WEP is pathetic and old. Just like that 802.11b router

How do I connect a dsl to a linksys wireless B router without obtaining IP address automatically?

My dsl has it's own IP address that must be used but the linksys setup won't allow it. Says I have to let the computer obtain the IP address automatically. How do I do this.|||You'll probably have better luck if you just forget the Setup CD and try it manually.

Here are some steps to try.

First connect the line from the DSL modem to the router WAN port.

Next plug the computer into the router with a Cat5 ethernet cable. Open a browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1 and login to the router's webclient. On the Setup page choose static IP and enter the IP/Subnet mask along with any connection options that you might have from the ISP. From here also enable the DHCP server option as well and save. Also make sure to change the routers default username and password and to set up some type of security on the wireless such as WPA along with a shared key. Next configure your wireless NIC to Get an IP address automatically and use the wireless NIC's software or Windows discovery tool to search and connect to your wireless network.

Obviously you can remove the Cat 5 after the wireless is enabled.

Now it will be a little different in terms of addressing if you have a modem/router combo instead of just a DSL modem given to you by your ISP.

Linksys router (WRT54GS) for an office setup of 25 people?

Presently i have a Cisco SOHO97 router in the office. Unfotunately we dont have any control systems in place for bandwidth shaping. I have some guys who use P2P programs and wreck havok on the internet in the office and i cannot do much about it. So ive been reading about the Linksys WRT54GS and Bufallo routers and the Tomato Fimware that can be installed on it. Im pretty impressed with what can be done with the fimware. I can have some decent QOS for the Skype calls etc and also put some serious limits on P2P to some degree.

I have 25 people in the office most of whom use the internet for basic email. and there are some that kill it. My question is, Will the WRT54GS be able to handle the load of 25 computers? SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY. Thanks a ton.|||if this is exclusively for wireless, than you may have a problem with 25 people connecting (i believe "g" is maxed out at 22, but i can't remember for sure)

software: i have no experience with tomato, i've just used the factory firmware.

hardware: i've been using one form of this router or another (usually with at least one 8port switch) for close to three years, and i've been surprised that it could handle the kind of loads of users that it has and the bandwidth i've sent through it. i used a 3com 8port 10/100 switch that failed without a fan when more than 5 users were connected and sending regular data (that was back in the diablo 2 days).|||I don't see why not, but unless at least 21 of your computers are wireless, you will need to connect a switch to the router, as it only has 4 ports.

Edit: There are 14 WLAN channels, 13 are avalible in Europe, 11 in North America.|||You need also a Cisco Switch if possible. Then you can configure VLAN for everyone that is connected to the office. You can direct which traffic each computer or port are allowed to traffic, that means those guys who uses the Internet can still have their time and it means security for whole office as you can disallow or deny some of the people who are not supposed to have access to some of the resources.

Even if the computers are wireless, you now have better encryptions (WAP and even WAP2) which can help you with security on who logs on to the system.

In Network key, type the network key, and then in Confirm network key, retype the key.

The only problem is....when I look to the left there is NO tab that says related tasks. Please help! Thank you!!!!|||Hey,

First thing to do is check if your new computer has a wireless card in it. If it does, then you should see a little icon in your windows taskbar near the volume and time with a little computer and little waves coming out of it.

If you do not have a wireless card:

1. Plug your modem into the WAN slot of your router.

2. Plug each computer's ethernet port to one of the available LAN/numbered slots of the router.

That's it!

If you have a wireless card:

1. Plug your modem into the WAN slot of your router.

2. Plus your other computer into one of the slots in the back of yoru router.

3. The new computer will access your router via wireless.

a. From your wired computer, open a browser window and type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. You should be prompted for a username and password. Try blank and 'admin' or 'admin' and 'admin' or 'admin' and 'adminadmin' or combinations of these.

b. Once logged in, you will have access to the router's configurations. There should be a wizard for you to run. You may also want to do a little research here to make sure you know what you're doing. Only change the wireless settings and put a WEP password.

c. Your wireless computer should now detect nearby networks and you can click that little computer icon on the taskbar to choose which network to connect to and change other preferences. Choose your network and enter the password in the settings.

That should be it.

How come I can't get online with my linksys wireless broadband router?

I have an ethernet connection and I followed all the steps to setup the linksys wireless broadband router WRT54GS. After that I couldn't get online on my original laptop and the one trying to use the wireless was very slow. What can I do?|||Sounds like you have two issues.

1. The computer that will not connect at all. Connect the computer to the router using an ethernet cable. Turn the computer off and back on. This should allow the router to update the ip address of the computer. Verify that you can get on the internet. If this works, disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer, turn on the wireless feature of the computer. Locate the SSID of your router from the list of available wireless connections. Enter the SSID and Encryption code (generally, found on a tag on the bottom of the router).

2. Slow connection on computer that will connect wirelessly. Clear the Cache of your browser (assuming ie, tools, internet options, browsing history, delete, temporary..., cookies, history).

Move the computer to a direct line of sight position relative to the router. The signal strength should max out. If not try the same thing with your other computer. If both still read low signal there may be a problem with the router, contact Linksys or exchange the router for a new one.

Good Luck|||Turn off your modem and unplug the router. Then, plug the router back in. Wait for the router to power up and only then turn on the modem. They're rather picky about the order in which they get turned on.

Help! just purchased linksys wireless router need help with setup.?

i just purchased a linksys wireless router. i have comcast internet on my desktop but would like internet on my laptop. did i purchase the right product? does the router go on the desktop or laptop?

i'm not computer literate, sorry if it's a stupid question.|||You used to have the cable modem connected directly to the LAN port of the computer.

Now you need to run the wire from the cable modem to the WAN port of the Router. Then run a second wire from one of the four LAN ports on the router to the computer. Follow the setup guide that came with the router to set up. This usually involves running a CD. If you are not experienced with this I really recommend that you do that. But here is an outline

1. Go to http://192.168.x.y. This can be different for each router and you didn't tell us the model number. Check your user guide.

2. The default sign on is different for each model too. Some the user is admin but the password is blank, some the user is blank but the password is admin. etc.

3. You should give the router a name and you should set a security password that the CD will help you set up. However, you can for the time being just use the default name. There are a lot of routers out there with the name 'linksys' and no security.|||I'm assuming that you were getting your internet directly from the cable modem before. You'll need to unplug the ethernet cable from your desktop computer and plug it into the proper port on the router. Then you'll need to run a new ethernet cable from Port 1 on the router to your desktop computer.

To get wireless internet on your laptop, your wireless network may need to be configured.

Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.1.1/

If it prompts you for a username and password, type "admin" in each field. Your router should have come with basic instructions on what to do from there.

How do I setup my T-Mobile/Linksys Router?

I'm trying to setup the T-Mobile router on a different computer because my last one died. Normally the install CD and everything associated with it works just fine. Now however when it gets to the point where it tries to detect my current network settings (Comcast cable modem, nothing fancy or different from how they first install it) it says it can't detect my settings and says to either make sure your computer has a wired connection to the router (the router isn't supposed to be connected yet), check your modem connection (I'm on the internet obviously) or check the status of your ISP. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've never had this problem before.|||I would bypass the setup disc, and setup the router manually. Plug a Cat 5 cable into one of the ports, open internet explorer, type the routers gateway/IP address, usually it's 192.168.0.1 for the tmobile/linksys routers, and setup everything manually. You don't have to run the disc that's included.

any help is appreciated|||You problem is a duplicate IP address. Normally these router use the first available IP address of their network. The message which you are seeing proves to me that the server that is resetting the connection is your own PC and not the Linksys box.

You need to change the IP address on your PC and if you really need to have a fixed IP address then you also need to put in a Default Gateway address, this address would be the IP address of the Linksys router.

Alternately, enable DHCP and you will always get a correct address and all of the other required data would always be updated.

I notice that you do not have DHCP enabled on your WAN port of the Linksys either, unless you have a fixed IP address you may run into connections at a later date. If you know that it is fixed then that is OK but if you recall that it is supposed to be Dynamic then change this setting to enable DHCP.

Another issue, you have IP routing enabled, this is not necessary and I would disable it because you only have one path out of your own network and that is through the ISP

Note to Lori:

No, not a power trip, before my retirement I was a Network Engineer, my purpose is to help people and I am very familiar with these error messages and a duplicate IP address answers this message, a cable plugged into the WAN port would just time out and give you a message that the web site could not be found.

Perhaps if you listened you might learn something.|||Your router is not detecting the Default Gateway, therefore, try to reset the router by pressing the Reset button on the back side for 1 min at least. That will clear all your settings and return it to factory settings. So you'll have to setup up the router again. Make sure you disable and re-enable your Network adapter in Windows. You can do that by going to Control Panel --%26gt; System --%26gt; Device Manager|||It appears you have a couple of things going on...

you need to make sure the router is setup correctly. let me give you some info.

Ok, make sure the router is plugged in to teh wall for power. Next plug in the rj45 cable to the LAN port and plug the other end into your network card. If you do not have the (usually blue) rj45 cable plugged into your pc, then it won't find the router.

Let me see what the ip address is for your router. ok 192.168.1.1 is correct.

here is the manual: http://www.linkwan.com/gb/download/bookl鈥?/a>

in case you don't have it.

It also says to do the following once you hook it up:

Press the Reset button on the front of the router. Hold the button in for

three seconds, or until the Diag LED illuminates red. This restores the

router鈥檚 default settings.

by the way, do not put your blue cable from your pc into the WAN hole, put it in any of the plugs labelled 1 -4.

If the router is plugged in you will have lights, so if no lights then no power is going to the router.

If you have lights, then check the network rj45 cable is in the LAN not WAN port and the other end, plugged into your network card. Make sure the cable ends are pushed all the way in.

How do I configure my Siemens 4100 Speedstream DSL Modem to work with my Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router?

I'm trying to setup my parent's Wireless internet and I'm having serious issues. I can't seem to get the Siemens Modem and the Wireless router to play nicely together. They have AT%26amp;T DSL service, but my Father purchased the modem at a retail store. The internet works just fine when hardlined into the PC directly. However when I attempt to wire everything through the Wireless Router, it's a no go.

I went through the Linksys Router Setup today (I've setup a FEW of these before with success) and the setup went over pretty smoothly. It recognized the router and everything was going alright...except that I couldn't get to any websites on the connection locally.

I called Linksys customer support which had me jump through several different hoops but we ultimately came to the conclusion that the issue was either on the Modem or ISP side. Basically the Modem wasn't recognizing the router (if I remember the support tech correctly). She mentioned that I should call AT%26amp;T to see if they could bridge the connection (again, if I remember correctly) somehow to allow the router to be recognized and work properly.

I'm trying to get ahold of AT%26amp;T about the issue but I fear they might not be able to help since my parents didn't purchase the modem through them. Any attempts to even get ahold of a Siemens customer supprt rep have failed (I called about 5 different numbers until I came to a number that didn't work...awesome).

I thought I'd come on here and ask to see if anyone knew off the top of their heads what might be my issue. I've done a little research on the internet about the problem and I've found a few resources but everyone seems to have 10 different opinions of how to actually fix it. I thought maybe if I laid out my details specifically I could get an answer more catered to my needs.

If you need any additional details from me to help find an answer please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

-Justin|||During your whole rant there, you didn't actually give any specifics. HOW are you setting up the router? I hope you're using PPPoE, and have input their ATT username and password into the router. That's how it needs to be done. Do not bother to try to bridge the connection between the modem and router, that's not how it works. Just login to the Linksys router through its 192.168.1.1 website address, set it to PPPoE, input the username/password, and connect it. That's all it takes.|||Well I'm not exactly sure where I was "ranting" about the question, but I appreciate your answer just the same. Part of the issue with it was the fact that I was unfamiliar with the process of setting up the router in a PPPoE. I was able to eventually get it up and running though.

|||ATT has a decent support service once they get to it. But they are so slow that you have to be Job or have a great novel to read. Last time I used their service it took 4 days and about 20 different people or departments but they fixed the problem. their initial 800 number is in att.com and they will help you if you have the 10 digit account number (doesnt't matter where you bought what).

I had the issue of not getting to the websites. There is a check to be put (or erased) in some sub-sub-sub window in that 192.168.1.1. thingy or whatever the number is. So, only ATT can help you because they know what tells their machines to go ahead and connect to the websites at the end of the day. Linksys Adapter And Router Problem, Plz help!?

I just bought a wireless Llinksys Pci adapter. The model of this device is WMP54GS, and the router is Wireless G broadband Router. I noticed on the back of the router box, it says works with WMP54G, But i suppose it will work with all wireless G adapters? No?

I have the updated driver for windows vista for my wireless WMP54GS, i disabled my Ethernet card, and the linksys Router Setup Advisor STILL don't recongnize the wireless adapter. Am i doing something wrong? or both of these device don't work together??|||You are right - your Linksys PCI adapter will work as 54 Mbps (version g of the 802....standards of the Wi-Fi Specs), same as your router.

As a matter of fact, any make of PCI Adapter will work with any Router - doesn't matter BELKIN, Netgear, Siemens etc PCI adapters with Linksys or any other brand Router.. Only the speed of Data Transfer will depend on whether the hardware is b (11Mbps) or g (54 Mbps).

First of all. check if the ROUTER is successfully connected to the Internet - for this open your browser and type the Gateway number given in the Router manual - usually http//192.168.1.1. Your Linksys Router must appear on the PC Screen.

Now you have to link WIRELESSLy the PCI to the Router. For that, go to the Networking icon on your PC Desktop or Control panel.Check if the Linksys Wireless Network is available for the PCI to access..

Then go to your SYSTEM in the Control Panel and ensure that the PCI hardware is installed.

Go to the Properties of the PCI Adapter and select AUTOMATICALLY DETECT the Router's IP %26amp; DNS numbers. The PCI should then automatically connect to the Router.

Otherwise you will have to PHYSICALLY ENTER the 5 Rows of Numbers (4 sections in each)

1) IP Address of your PC (e.g. 192.168.1.10) in which 10 is the 10th Computer/Laptop number in the System

2) IP Address of your Internet Gateway (usually 192.168.1.1)

3) Subnet Mask (this is automatic and will appear as

255.255.255.0)

4)Primary DNS

5)Secondary DNS

Check with your Internet Service Provider for the current DNS configuration - they keep on changing these!

If you have from the earlier Ethernet the figures (go to to your IE Browser and under TOOLS %26amp; INTERNET OPTIONS select Connections. There, you will see (Properties of TCP/IP ) the DNS numbers you have been successfully using.

Best of luck!|||Here's a complete guide to how to do it.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone鈥?/a>|||it works with all adapters...try adjusting channel frequency of the wireless.|||there are 5 ports on the back of your router. one is green and marked "uplink". this connects to your broadband modem or dsl router by a standard cat-5 eithernet cable. You should have your either net card enabled. If there is a cat-5 eithernet cable attaching your computer to the router, unplug it at the computer end. The software will, by default, turn off the wireless link when a cat-5 network cable is conected (automatically). There is one other possibility. If your were using a USB connection to the broadband before, your ISP provider may need to change a setting at their end, and there may be a "mac" address problem as well. Your isp customer service can probably fix this over the phone. I recommend using the cat-5 connection always, unless the router is far enough away from the PC to make this un-feasable.

Once you have tested that the modem in working, plug the LAN cables back in and plug in the router. Static ip address setup using linksys wrt150n router?

i followed the instructions available online (youtube, portforward.com, etc) and i managed to change the ip address in my computer (internet connection properties). i have also followed the instructions for port forwarding for my router. the problem is, my azureus downloads are still so slow. i also configured my internet connection by the way. one thing in question is the settings for my router. in the basic setup, i noticed that the internet connection type is set to "automatic configuration-dhcp"

should i change that to static ip?

in any case,

i tried changing to static ip.

my next question is, how come the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway displayed are all different from the ones i set up myself? (eg. the static ip address i setup was 192.168.1.104. the one displayed in the router webpage is 192.168.255.248)

do i have to change the values in the router settings or in the pc settings? or do i not change anything?

i also tried the dhcp reservation, but the downloads are still slow...i still get yellow smileys.

right now, i reverted to the "automatically configure-dhcp" internet connection type. my ip address is manually configured, i have ports set up for both single port forwarding and port range forwarding.

i reserved my ip address in the dhcp reservation.

what am i doing wrong? please give me a detailed walkthrough on how to fix this.

thank you so much|||I don't know what azureus is, so someone else will have to finish answering this question.

But you don't want to change your internet IP to static. Your ISP will use DHCP to give your router an IP address. You can (and have) set your pc's to use static. This makes the forwarding easier because you know which pc to forward to. Your pc's gateway should be set to the routers internal ip address. (usually 192.168.1.1)

Remeber, your router has 2 IP's, an internal one to your network, and an external one to the internet. It performs what's called NAT, to forward your data to the internet as its own, and that's why you set up port forwarding to send incoming data to your computer.

DHCP reservation has to do with reserving ip's for your internal network. You should have 192.168.1.104 included in there as you set that statically on your pc. If you set your computer to DHCP, then your router will assign an IP that is not reserved. Usually in a range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150.

How can I setup my linksys G wrt54gs router without the setup cd?

It is a used router from a friend, and all I have is the cord to plug it into an outlet and a yellow patch cord. I tried plugging the patch cord into my computer, while it was attached to the router, but I only have one outlet in my computer that the cord fits into and it was already being used by my internet cable. I read online that if I type into the address bar "http://192.168.1.1/" I can setup my router, but my router has to be plugged into the computer and I have to be online. Is there any other way to set the router up, without buying a new one?|||The routers purpose is to split that internet connection. Unplug the internet patch cable from the computer and plug it into the router's "internet" port. Then use the yellow patch cable and run it from the computer to ANY of the other 4 ports on the linksys.

When the cables are correct you can then type "192.168.1.1" into your internet browser, and chances are that you will need to enter user-name and password, which will be user: admin pass: admin if the settings are default. (if it rejects the login credentials then you may need to reset the router)

Once logged in you can access the wireless setup for network name and password among other things.

if reset is needed then find the tiny reset button on the back and use a paperclip or pen to press and hold for 30 seconds while the power is unplugged.|||you have to manually do it if you don't know how watch these or call a computer tech

If there are more people using my wireless linksys router, would that make my computer go slower?

I have a linksys wireless router, i live in an apartment complex, my computer internet and xbox live will run great at times and then run very slow at other times. I think there are a couple users using my internet router.

The big Question is how can i tell if there are people using my wireless router, and how can i setup a password on my Linksys????|||No. It won't slow your computer itself down at all. Obviously, however, if someone is using your bandwidth, that's a different issue. It will effectively reduce the bandwidth available to you, the paying customer.

If you want to place a password on your wifi network, however, you should use WPA or WPA2. Do so via the HTTP interface to your router firmware, which you can access by typing the IP address of the router into the location bar of a web browser and hitting the %26lt;enter%26gt; key.

I would also suggest using a MAC address whitelist to ban all MAC addresses other than those of your devices (your Xbox, your PC, and any other WLAN device).|||Your internet connection speed is divided approximately equally among all users. If 10 people are all downloading a large file, each will see an internet speed of about 1/10 of the over all speed. Therefore as users increase, the internet speed seen by all users decreases per user.

The best way to keep freeloaders off is to activate wireless security.

First get the MAC address of the wireless ports of each pc you wish to permit access and record them.

Second, log onto the router with a wired pc to router link (never a wireless link), go to the wireless section, change the encryption to WPA or WPA2, set up a very strong preshare key (document it), activate MAC address validation and enter the MAC addresses of the wireless ports of all pcs you wish to permit access into the MAC validation table.

Third, go to each pc you wish to permit access and configure the wireless port for the encryption and enter the preshare key in the configuration.|||Ok well right now I can tell you that your computer itself will not be slow from network usage the Internet speed might lag if you have multile users online but other than that your computer should be fairly quick (unless its suckish computer). You can figure out if someone is using your wireless and you can also set a password (secure) on your wireless to stop the people from outside using it.

You need to "dial-in" to your router by going into your web browser and typing in "192.168.1.1

By default the Username will be blank and the password will be "password". ( On most routers in the US) I don't know what router you have so I can't really help you from here but you need to go to the security tab or something along those lines and use wpa or wpa2 (most secure) but WEP will work. Remember now that you have changed theese settings you will now have to reconfigure all your devices that use wireless. If nothing has worked so far then consult your user manual for the router or Internet Service Provider. Or you can hold the reset button on the router and this will retore it to factory settings. Then retry to dial in if it did not work the first time. On some routers there will be a device list that tells you what devices are copnnected. If you go here and find an unreconized device tht is not yours, then you can kick it (if it has that option)

Moving a router setup?

My Linksys router setup was secure and working OK until I started moving to a new house. I am getting an "excellent" signal to my laptop, but the internet is not working. When you turn off the router, do you need to reset something to get the settings to work again? Do I need to turn off the entire system (cable modem included) in a certain order to fix this? Any info (or a website I can visit) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!|||www.linksys.com would be your best bet. My DSL wireless internet has been working fine awhile. Then one day it stopped working. AT%26amp;T determined that is was a broken modem. I bought a new Motorola modem and Linksys wireless-n router. I set both of them up and I cannot get my wireless connection to work properly with my PC and Mac. When I hook the modem directly to the computers I get internet access, so the modem is fine.

When I hook up the modem to the Linksys wireless-n router the default setting is DHCP and I get wireless internet access on my Mac but not on my PC. When I set the router to PPPOE (with username/password etc.), I lose the wireless internet access on my Mac. My setting before all of this happened was PPOE and everything worked fine.

I remember that when my last router broke a couple years ago I also had a problem getting wireless internet setup and an AT%26amp;T tech determined that it was a conflict between the modem setting being DHCP (or something to that sort) and my Linksys router being PPOE. He walked me through changing something in the modem settings and I kept the PPOE setting on the router and everything worked fine. He also said something about when the IP expires that I may run into another problem and his fix was temporary (The fix worked for a couple of years and so nothing really expired).

So my question what do I need to change in my Linksys-N router and Motorola modem settings to get them to work together knowing that the setting of the router needs to be PPOE. I need wireless internet access for a PC and a Mac.

I need HELP..THANK YOU SOOO Much to anyone that can help!!|||Contact Linksys

Linksys WRT54G2 router set to manual wireless security but laptop wants to use wi-fi protection setup wizard?

It shouldn't ask for this if I set wireless security to manual, right?

Also, I found the pin number and when I put it in, it seemed to work. It said that the laptop was connected but it was in fact not.|||Some laptops force you to use their setup wizard. You'll need to go through that wizard. The laptop doesn't care if the router is set to manual or not. Try a google search for that linksys and your laptop model. Someone out there has probably had the same problem (and hopefully posted the solution).

How do I uninstall dd-wrt from my Linksys WRT54G Router?

I was going into my ip address to get to the router setup to set a new password for my wireless security when I noticed that the usually Linksys layout is covered by the dd-wrt. How do I go about remove this when I know I didn't install it in the first place?|||Not sure but it may have come that way - it is actually better firmware ($600.00 router firmware) for that router than the Cisco Firmware ($60.00 firmware)...you get more choices with it, expecially for the radio. you can boost your wireless signal, prioritize what programs get your precious bandwidth, and do lots of other simple or potentially much more complicated things to improve your computing experience If you do want to go back all you have to do is a firmware upgrade and that should do it for you

Regards|||Somebody installed it.

The only way to go back - and I'm not sure this will work - is a hard reset, which will undo all your settings.

I can't setup my router Linksys WRT54GS with ATT DSL... Can somebody help with the settings?

You don't need any CD. But it helps if you are aware of router basics. First, to get you connected to the modem.

1. Turn everything off.

2. Disconnect the cable from the DSL modem to the computer.

3. Connect the cable from the modem to the "Internet" port on the back of the router.

4. Connect a network cable from one of the other ports on the back of the router to your network port on your computer.

5. Turn your modem back on, then your router, then the computer.

6. When the computer comes up, make sure that your network settings are such that it obtains IP addresses automatically.

7. Open a browser and enter this address 192.168.1.1

8. A window should pop up asking you for a username and password. If it doesn't your network settings on your computer are wrong. If it does appear then skip the username and enter "admin" as the password and hit the enter key.

9. You should be in the setup window/basic setup.

10. At the very top, click in the dropdown box window and select PPPoE. The information in the widow will change a bit.

11. Enter your ATT DSL username and password in the next two boxes down. Leave the service name blank.

12. You should go down the list and make sure that there is a router name listed(doesn't really matter what it is), the local IP address is 192.168.1.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and that DHCP is enabled. Starting IP address should probably be 192.168.1.100 but that's not that important as long as the last block is above 1.

13. Hit save on the bottom of the screen.

14. Just for good measure, restart your computer. Yes for the others that read this, it may not be necessary and yes there are other ways to do it.

15. That should be it to setup a wired connection to the router.

To check the status of the connection of the router to the modem, go back to a browser window, type in the 192.168.1.1 address, skip the username, enter "admin" in the password box and hit enter (you can change all that if you wish, that's just the Linksys defaults) Click on the "Status" link on the top of the window and see if it says "Connected" in the Log In Status section. If it does then the info you entered is correct and you should be able to browse. If not then verify your account info and try again.

If you need to setup your wireless... Go to the Linksys website or read the manual. I frankly don't want to type that much here. ;-)|||This helped alot, thanks. However, there is one critical step missing that I was able to call AT%26amp;T to resolve. With the PC connected, and no router, you must browser to the DSL Admin screen and change the connection protocol from PPOe to Bridged Ethernet. Reconnect router and go.

How can i setup my linksys router/modem model no. WAG200G with pldt dsl? pls help ty...?

i called the pldt dsl customer service and ask what is our username and password but they said that they dont provide one and that pldt dsl is connected automatically pls tell me what to do???|||First things you got to do is go to your browser and type in "192.168.1.1" in your address bar without the quotes.

It will prompt you for your username and password, and by default, username and password is "admin" on the WAG200G, unless you specified otherwise.

You will now be looking at the setup page of the router and it starts at the "basic setup" page, and this is what you have to do with the options provided:

Encapsulation: RFC 1483 Bridged

Multiplex: LLC

Internet IP address: 192.168.1.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

in the primary and secondary dns

type 58.89.254.9

and 58.69.254.5

Now make sure you enter all this information on your PC's network adapter too, by turning on static IPs.

Once you've done that, turn on DHCP on your router. On the same page:

Local IP Address: 192.168.2.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Starting IP Address: 192.168.2.2

And you're good to go!

I have a 4 Port Wireless N Linksys Router and 2 Wireless G Access Point How it Setup Please Help Me?

If these are "real" access points only, you simply run an ethernet cable from the router to the location you want, and plug the access point into the cable. You configure the access point based on whatever Ip address it gets from the router, or you hard code that first, before connecting....|||You really don't want to use the G Access points. That forces the N router to operate only as a G router. Get two N access points. The simplest installation, once you have the N router set up, is to run an ethernet wire to each of the N Access points. They will set themselves up automatically.

My linksys wrt54g setup screen (GUI) makes my router restart?

Hi everyone. I'm having a weird problem. I bought a new Linksys wrt54g V8 router 3 months ago. I set it up and worked flawlessly for 3 months. A few days ago I bought a new laptop (not a new model) I used it with the router with no problems although I had to change in the WPA to tpk. But yesterday the new laptop started loosing connection and getting it back alone. I thought it was the computer, but I started having the same problem on the first notebook I used for the first 3 months without any trouble.

Trying to resolve something I went to the setup page (http://192.168.1.1) logged in without any problem but then I noticed that the router restarted alone. There I found a trigger at least.

So now I tried everything: power cycle, factory reset, firmware upgrade (now has v 8.0.5), but the router keeps on restarting every time I log in to the setup page. Sometimes I get to navigate through a couple of pages, but then gets restarted. Some other times the pages load without the words (just the background and graphics).

As I restored factory settings, I'm wired connected but seems to be the same.

The weird thing is that for the last couple of hours I been able to surf the web without any problems, or at least I can't get to trigger it when I'm surfing. But as soon as I log to the setup page.. Boom.. the router restarts.

Some info:

Have a Thinkpad t41 802.1b (that's the new laptop I mentioned)

Have a Macbook 802.1g (the one I used for 3 months)

Tried both wireless and wired

Have Cable modem service

Power recycle didn't work

Back to Factory Settings didn't work

Firmware upgrade didn't work.

No firewall problem.

No Zonealarm installed

Browser cache cleared.

Tried with 3 different browsers and 2 different computers.

Seems that the thinkpad has caused some problem. I just upgrade it to Win XP SP3 with some other updates it downloaded. Maybe something there...I don't know.

Any clues? Any ideas? Someone having the same problem?

Thanks in advance!!!|||Several thoughts, both bad.

One. You could have a very sharp hacker trying to keep control of your router. Try resetting it, getting in via an Ethernet cable and keeping wireless administration turned OFF. Taking the router to someplace far away and working with it there, even off the Web, may also help isolate the problem.

Two. This is the really scary one. I've worried for a long time that eventually someone out on the Web is going to whip up a router virus. There's a little operating system in there, so it's feasible. Once they have the router, your network is a 'bot and there's darn little you can do about it. I'm not sure even the router manufacturers have this possibility on their radars. I would have expected a load of new firmware would have taken this out, but I'm not sure. I haven't a clue as to what to do about this.

Much good luck.

How to restore your linksys router without internet connection?

I updated (or tried) to update my router setup and i downloaded the file. It was loading and it loaded completely and then i waited 5 mins. No internet connection. So i waited 1 day and it wasn't up. I got a new router and it still won't work.

All i did was configure that router. I don't understand why is my whole connection screwed up? I got a brand new router and it can't find the connection.

What do i do now? Is there a way to fix this?|||By updating your router, do you mean you were flashing the router? If something went wrong during the flashing process you could have killed your router. Hopefully that's not what happened! Generally you shouldn't flash a router unless there is a specific need to do so, and you always want to flash it with a hardwire connection straight into the router, (don't do it with a wireless connection).

SBC DSL - Wireless setup with Linksys router?

Hi,

My gf has a dsl connection from SBC (internet thru phone lines) and it works just fine connected to her PC but when i connect a wireless router to it and try to connect my laptop to the network...it connects but it says it has an ip address conflict. I figured that the public Ip which was assigned to my gf's PC and to my laptop are the same. How do i get my laptop and other LAN devices to get private ip address?|||Reinstall your networking with that router. ~|||The Ip assigned to your pc is done so by the router. I ask which device do you have trying to authenticate, the router or modem? Best setup, is to have the modem authenticate and the router just dyamically assign IP to the devices connected. If you have an older modem that does not have PPPOE software built in, then have your router authenticate and not the software on your PCs. If you have more the one device trying to authenticate on a PPPOE connection, you will have issues.

To determine which modem you have, look at the front, how many lights? If its a 2wire either 3 or 5 will have the builtin PPPOE. If it is a Efficient Networks modem, 4 lights does not and 5 light does. If 4 lights, then you will have to access your router to have it do authentication for you.|||if you would like the router to do the authentication - have your modem set to bridgemode -

what is happening is that ur modem most like has pppoe since it connects right away to ur pc and has issues when there is a router in between- ur router is also trying to authenticate- there should only be one equipment doing it -

to set it to bridgemode - go to the help.sbcglobal.net and post your question

Why can't i connect my linksys router to my comcast modem and gateway computer?

my cable connections are not ethernet, they r usb. the steps in the Linksys cd setup do not apply to my connections. the second step is to disconnect my ethernet from my gateway comp. and put into the internet whole on the router. there is no ethernet cable connection to my gateway. there is only a usb plugged into my modem and it connects to by gateway via a usb plug.|||your problem is you are using usb, unplug the usb cord and put in a drawr and dont use it, go get an ethernet jumper and attach it between the modem and the router and a ethernet jumper between your router and computer, and dont let me hear you mention usb and internet in the same breath again. just kidding.

your router must have an ethernet connection on it as well as the usb, you will need to use that insted of the usb cable.

everything needs to be connected with ethernet jumpers.

Good Luck

TV|||First off, you already stated your problem that you don't have a network card. If you have a wireless Linksys router, I suggest purchasing a wireless network card for your Gateway PC. You might as well go wireless if that is the case. It's very simple to install the network card into your PC. Just double check that you have open PCI slots available.

If you've recently purchased the Gateway, maybe you might get some type of free support or discount on upgrades. Good luck.|||you might still be able to connect your gateway computer to the linksys router anyways (but you'll need a cable, usually provided with your linksys router, somewhere in the box) one end of the cable plugs into the linksys router itself, and the other end of the cable plugs into the gateway computer's ethernet port (looks like the ports on the back of the linksys router) if your gateway computer does not have an ethernet port that means that your gateway computer does not have an ethernet adapter installed or doesn't have ethernet built in (which may be why usb connections were used for your comcast internet connection to begin with)

in that case, you will have to purchase an ethernet adapter for your computer (cheap to buy) or a wireless adapter for your gateway computer (not so cheap) your gateway computer needs ethernet or wireless capability to use the linksys router

good luck :-)|||I have the same thing cable line to the modem, line from the modem to the router line from port one of the router to the Ethernet card in the computer.

note: even though you are using USB line you have to have Ethernet card installed inside the computer.

but BE AWARE that all the CONFIGURATIONS you've made will be erased/GONE...|||reset the router.

as a little advice, i always write user and pass on a paper and i stick somewhere on the device. obviously, it's useful when you're at home or a small office, not where too many people can get their hands in the configuration.|||Maybe you can BRUTE force attack. How do I find out host and domain name to setup my Roadrunner Internet with my Linksys BEFSR41 router???

Okay, I have Roadrunner and am trying to connect two computers to the internet through a Linksys router, model # BEFSR41. I set it all up but cannot get it to work (always only one computer will be connected, the other says limited/no connectivity). I went to the Linksys Help site and read all about the setup for the computers and the router also. It says when using cable service you have to fill in host name and domain name on the router's setup page, which I would have to contact my Internet service provider for. I just did this, but Roadrunner just won't assist me at all with this setup issue. They said I will have to contact Linksys for that, and as far as I understood it, they only assist if it is a RR router! I read from many people that it works fine with a Linksys router and just hate how the RR customer support won't do anything. They did not give me host/domain name info. How can I find that info out?

Can anyone PLEASE help me?????????? Please!|||Log into your routers settings, make sure you have "obtain ip address automatically" checked. Check to make sure you have DHCP enabled on the router as well, thats what assigns your ip address to each computer. Make sure both computers are plugged into the router. Should have 2 green lights on the router by the numbers 1,2,3 or 4 (two of them should be lit up) stating that you have two wired connections to it. If you dont, check the cables. Go to the pc that isnt getting on the web ( I assume you described that one will connect, the other one wont). Double click on its network settings and make sure it is set to "obtain ip address automatically". Click on "start" then click "run". Type cmd in the white box, and hit the enter key. This should bring up a black box with a command prompt, type in ipconfig and hit the enter key. You should get some thing like this:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

If you get that kind of info, your connected to your router and are communicating. If not, check your cable connections (try a different ethernet cable) also check your network connections in your device manager. You may have your network card disabled or the wrong/missing drivers. Normally routers are plug and play, just plug them in, and away you go.

FYI: I have road runner, and I dont need to fill in any host or domain name settings, that information is in the modem that the cable company provides me. If your router is set to obtain an ip automatically, you dont need a username/password.|||Try the clone method, it is very easy.
