SBC DSL - Wireless setup with Linksys router?

Hi,

My gf has a dsl connection from SBC (internet thru phone lines) and it works just fine connected to her PC but when i connect a wireless router to it and try to connect my laptop to the network...it connects but it says it has an ip address conflict. I figured that the public Ip which was assigned to my gf's PC and to my laptop are the same. How do i get my laptop and other LAN devices to get private ip address?|||Reinstall your networking with that router. ~|||The Ip assigned to your pc is done so by the router. I ask which device do you have trying to authenticate, the router or modem? Best setup, is to have the modem authenticate and the router just dyamically assign IP to the devices connected. If you have an older modem that does not have PPPOE software built in, then have your router authenticate and not the software on your PCs. If you have more the one device trying to authenticate on a PPPOE connection, you will have issues.

To determine which modem you have, look at the front, how many lights? If its a 2wire either 3 or 5 will have the builtin PPPOE. If it is a Efficient Networks modem, 4 lights does not and 5 light does. If 4 lights, then you will have to access your router to have it do authentication for you.|||if you would like the router to do the authentication - have your modem set to bridgemode -

what is happening is that ur modem most like has pppoe since it connects right away to ur pc and has issues when there is a router in between- ur router is also trying to authenticate- there should only be one equipment doing it -

to set it to bridgemode - go to the help.sbcglobal.net and post your question
