If there are more people using my wireless linksys router, would that make my computer go slower?

I have a linksys wireless router, i live in an apartment complex, my computer internet and xbox live will run great at times and then run very slow at other times. I think there are a couple users using my internet router.

The big Question is how can i tell if there are people using my wireless router, and how can i setup a password on my Linksys????|||No. It won't slow your computer itself down at all. Obviously, however, if someone is using your bandwidth, that's a different issue. It will effectively reduce the bandwidth available to you, the paying customer.

If you want to place a password on your wifi network, however, you should use WPA or WPA2. Do so via the HTTP interface to your router firmware, which you can access by typing the IP address of the router into the location bar of a web browser and hitting the %26lt;enter%26gt; key.

I would also suggest using a MAC address whitelist to ban all MAC addresses other than those of your devices (your Xbox, your PC, and any other WLAN device).|||Your internet connection speed is divided approximately equally among all users. If 10 people are all downloading a large file, each will see an internet speed of about 1/10 of the over all speed. Therefore as users increase, the internet speed seen by all users decreases per user.

The best way to keep freeloaders off is to activate wireless security.

First get the MAC address of the wireless ports of each pc you wish to permit access and record them.

Second, log onto the router with a wired pc to router link (never a wireless link), go to the wireless section, change the encryption to WPA or WPA2, set up a very strong preshare key (document it), activate MAC address validation and enter the MAC addresses of the wireless ports of all pcs you wish to permit access into the MAC validation table.

Third, go to each pc you wish to permit access and configure the wireless port for the encryption and enter the preshare key in the configuration.|||Ok well right now I can tell you that your computer itself will not be slow from network usage the Internet speed might lag if you have multile users online but other than that your computer should be fairly quick (unless its suckish computer). You can figure out if someone is using your wireless and you can also set a password (secure) on your wireless to stop the people from outside using it.

You need to "dial-in" to your router by going into your web browser and typing in "192.168.1.1

By default the Username will be blank and the password will be "password". ( On most routers in the US) I don't know what router you have so I can't really help you from here but you need to go to the security tab or something along those lines and use wpa or wpa2 (most secure) but WEP will work. Remember now that you have changed theese settings you will now have to reconfigure all your devices that use wireless. If nothing has worked so far then consult your user manual for the router or Internet Service Provider. Or you can hold the reset button on the router and this will retore it to factory settings. Then retry to dial in if it did not work the first time. On some routers there will be a device list that tells you what devices are copnnected. If you go here and find an unreconized device tht is not yours, then you can kick it (if it has that option)
