When I try to set up my Linksys router to my computer, the setup program says that I have another router. I don't. It's my Westell Model 6100 DSL Modem. Why does it do this? What should I do about setting up my linksys router? What should I do with my modem? Should I unplug the ethernet cable from my computer before installation of my linksys router next time?|||The Westell modem also has router functions built in, which is what the Linksys is picking up on.
You can try telling the Linksys to ignore the presence of the router, or set it up without the connection to your modem as you suggested. Sometimes daisy chaining routers is a bad idea, but sometimes they work just fine.
Another option would be to turn off the NAT and DHCP functions on your Linksys and plug the modem cable into a LAN port (not the WAN) on your Linksys. That makes your Linksys into a switch and wireless access point without the routing features.|||You dont even need to run the setup anyway. Unplug the power cord on your modem and router, make sure they are connected properly, then turn the modem and then the router on. Give the two of them a minute or so to power up and they should work.
