I just hard wired a linksys wireless router to my desktop. How do we get my roommates laptop connected to our network? How do we make our network secure? any help would be appreciated.|||Make sure that the WiFi router is configured with a WPA (or WPA2) key (*not* WEP). Remember the key -- you'll need it for your roomate's laptop. Also -- give the router a recognizable name so that it will be easy to distinguish it from other WiFi routers that might be in your area.
The laptop must either have a built-in WiFi radiio, or you'll need a WiFi PC-card adapter. If the WiFi is built-in, make sure the radio is turned on. On some laptops this is via a switch on the laptop itself; on some, it is done via the control panel. On some, it's on all the time -- if you can't find a switch, assume this is the case.
A wireless network icon should appear in the task bar area on the lower right. Double-clicking on it should make the Wireless Network wizard appear, displaying all of the WiFi networks it finds within range. Double click on yours and enter the key when asked. That should do it.|||Read the manual!
Log into the router and run the wizard, its a no brainer. You'll be all set in 5 minutes.|||That depends on whether their laptop is wireless or not which info you didnt provide! If its wireless, just run the internet connection wizard and select connect thru lan|||The first step to this problem is to refer to the user manual. It will contain step-by-step information on how to accomplish this task. Your router may also come with a CD containing software htat will set all of that up for you. If you do not have the user manual or the CD, try the following steps:
Step 1: You'll need to determine your wireless router's internal IP address (default gateway). Using the computer that is hard wired to your router:
Click Start %26gt; Run %26gt; type in CMD and press Enter %26gt; then type ipconfig /all and press Enter
Write down the IP address (number) that is displayed for the "Default Gateway". This is your router's internal IP address. Most Linksys routers use either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Step 2: Open an Internet Explorer window and type the default gateway's IP address into the address bar. This will bring up the administration window for your router and will most likely require you to log in. The default log in information for MOST Linksys routers is a blank username and Admin as the password (case sensitive). If you have the user manual, please refer to it for the correct password.
Step 3: Once you have successfully logged into your router's administration/control panel, find the wireless section and enable the wireless network, if it has not already been enabled
Step 4: Locate the Security sub-section of the wireless section and set up your router to use either WPA or WEP, depending on which standard your roommate's laptop supports. WPA is more rubust and secure than WEP, but if his laptop doesn't support it it wont work, and WEP is still better than nothing!
When setting up your wireless security, be sure to write down all passphrases and security keys on a peice of paper. You will need to enter this into your roommate's laptop, so that he will be able to gain access to your now password-protected router.
Step 5: Click "Save Settings" at the botttom of your router's admin panel and exit the page
Step 6: Setup your roommate's laptop to auto-logon to your wireless router, when it's within range. See the following website on how to use the Windows Wireless-Configuration Utility:
http://ecross.mvps.org/howto/configwlan.鈥?/a>
View the screenshot on that page. That is the same diaglog box you need to access to Add a network (note the Add button) to the Preferred Networks section, so that your roommate's laptop will automatically connect to your router.
